Germany holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2007. At the same time, 2007 is also “The Year of the Humanities”. This and the current debate as to whether European identity is something that can be created, defined and depicted have prompted the Centre for the History and Culture of East Central Europe at the University of Leipzig (Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas - GWZO) to organize a conference on the abundance of forms European identity can take. This colloquium will take stock of the current research on Europeanism being conducted in various disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. In doing so, it will also address the concerns of European expansion and networking in a globalized world from the standpoint of cultural sciences and the humanities.
